SPORTS: Oh Snap! Will Kobe Play Against the Wizards?

LA Times reports — According to Kobe Bryant’s Twitter feed, the Lakers All-Star guard is probable for the Lakers’ battle at Staples Center Friday night against the Washington Wizards.

A Lakers spokesman confirmed that Pau Gasol and Bryant are probable to start against the Wizards.  Gasol has missed more than six weeks with a foot injury.  Bryant has been out for almost three full games with a sprained ankle. Gasol would get the nod over Earl Clark at power forward.

Coach Mike D’Antoni initially expressed concern about Gasol’s conditioning after so much time off and considered using him off the bench for a few games.  D’Antoni, though, prefers to start Gasol, despite benching him earlier in the season for Clark.

It’s likely that Gasol will start with his playing time closely monitored until his conditioning improves.

The Utah Jazz are playing in San Antonio on Friday as well.  A Lakers (36-33) victory coupled with a Utah (34-34) loss would put the Lakers 2 1/2 games ahead of the ninth-place Jazz.

Dwight Stays in LA: Dwight Howard won’t be traded, Mitch Kupchak says

With-the-Lakers-struggling-is-Dwight-Howard-starting-to-wonder-if-he-wants-to-sign-in-L.A.-long-term.-Getty-Images

According to the Washington Post — With the NBA trade deadline approaching at 3 p.m. EST, one player is going nowhere: Unless General Manager Mitch Kupchak is the world’s best bluffer, the Los Angeles Lakers will hold onto Dwight Howard.

“We’ve been very consistent,” Kupchak said on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” (via ESPN). “We’re not trading Dwight Howard. … He will not be traded, and there’s nothing that anybody can do today to call me today and ask me, ‘Would you do this?’ and get a positive result.”

All righty then. Of course, Howard can render all the affection moot if he decides to become a free agent when the season ends.

“The only thing that matters is right now,” Howard said. “Nobody can control what happens in the offseason. Like I said to you guys before, there’s no need to talk about it every day.

“There’s no need for me to make a decision right now. My goal hasn’t changed. I want to win a championship and I want to win one here. I’m here right now and this is our chance to get one this season. It’s been tough, but we have an opportunity to change all that.”

Kupchak was a little less adamant about trading Pau Gasol, who is out with torn plantar fascia.

“We’re not going to trade Pau today or tomorrow, but his name has come up in the past, and it would be misleading to say it won’t come up in the future,” Kupchak said.

YES! There Is Hope For The Lakers, BROWN Gets Fired!!!

Well DAMN, I am having a shitty Friday but this just made it better! I am so happy that they got rid of BROWN, now if ONLY Phil would come out of retirement.

LA Times reports — The Lakers have fired Mike Brown as coach after the team’s 1-4 start, according to a person familiar with the situation but not authorized to speak publicly about it. Brown was barely a month into his second season with the team, which struggled badly amid high expectations.

[Updated at 10:45 a.m.: Assistant coach Bernie Bickerstaff will coach tonight's game against Golden State but the Lakers will conduct a national search for a long term replacement. Candidates could include Mike D'Antoni, Jerry Sloan, Nate McMillan and Phil Jackson.]

It was believed to be the earliest firing of a coach in the team’s history. Del Harris was relieved of his duties 12 games into the 1999 season. The Lakers were 41-25 in Brown’s first season, losing to Oklahoma City in the second round of the playoffs. The team has had trouble picking up Brown’s Princeton-based offense and has also lagged defensively.

SPORTS: Former Laker Orlando Woolridge Dies At 52

So sad, he was still young. My condolences go out to his family & friends. May you Rest In Peace ORLANDO!!!

Daily News reports — MANSFIELD, La. – Former NBA standout Orlando Woolridge has died at his parents’ home in Mansfield, La. He was 52.

DeSoto Parish Chief Deputy Coroner Billy Locke said the former Lakers player and Sparks head coach died Thursday night. He had been under hospice care for a chronic heart condition.

Woolridge was a first-round draft pick of the Chicago Bulls in 1981 and played in the NBA for 13 years. He was a star at Mansfield High School before going on to play for Notre Dame, where he was a second-team All-American as a senior.

Drafted sixth overall in the 1981 draft, he spent his first five seasons with the Bulls and averaged 22.9 points per game during Michael Jordan’s first season in 1984-85.

After Woolridge joined the New Jersey Nets and was suspended by the league for violation of the league substance abuse policy in 1987, he signed with the Lakers in 1988. As a role player, the 6-foot-9 power forward provided offensive firepower and size off the bench. His 55.6% field goal percentage during the 1989-90 season was fifth in the NBA.

In the summer of 1990, Woolridge was traded to Denver for two second-round draft picks. He also played for Detroit (1991-93), Milwaukee (1993) and Philadelphia (1993-94) before playing two seasons in Italy

He later coached the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, taking over for Julie Rousseau in 1998 and splitting the team’s last 10 games. In 1999, the Sparks went 20-12 and made their first trip to the WNBA playoffs, winning the Western Conference semifinal before falling to the two-time defending champion Houston Comets in the conference final.

Woolridge’s son Renaldo carried on the family name in area hoops, starring at Harvard-Westlake as a two-time Mission League MVP and all-state honoree. At 6-foot-9 like his father, Renaldo Woolridge averaged 23 points and 11 rebounds as a senior.

Renaldo Woolridge played at Tennessee but has transferred to USC, where he will play as a senior next season

SPORTS: Jordan Hill Will Play In Game 2 vs. Denver, Says Coach Mike Brown

CHAMPS!!!

LA Times reports — At least for one game, Jordan Hill’s pending court case in Houston stemming from a third-degree felony charge won’t affect his on-court availability. Lakers Coach Mike Brown said Hill will play Tuesday in Game 2 against the Denver Nuggets.

Hill attended Tuesday morning’s shootaround, despite a spokeswoman for the Harris County district attorney telling The Times’ Mike Bresnahan that Hill needed to attend a hearing in Houston on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. CT. Hill’s agent, Kevin Bradbury, said a court appearance hadn’t been mandated yet.

Even if Hill has to go to Houston at some point, the Lakers don’t expect that he will have to miss any practices or games.

The concern for Hill’s playing availability would’ve been an afterthought two weeks ago after sitting out 13 games because of a sprained ligament in his right knee. But Brown played Hill on April 22 against Oklahoma City, admittedly out of curiosity, and Hill responded with 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. It earned him a permanent spot in the rotation, with Hill posting 10 points and 10 rebounds in the Lakers’ Game 1 victory Sunday over Denver.

“I just wanted to give him an opportunity to see what he had and he played well,” Brown said after Tuesday’s morning shootaround. “He used his length, athleticism and ability to score around the basket and block shots. I just said, I’ll keep playing him. If he keeps playing well, I’ll keep playing him.”

Hill didn’t speak with reporters after Tuesday’s shootaround. But he offered apologies to the Lakers both through a statement and in front of the media after Monday’s practice.

“I can’t speak on [the charges] right now. I’ll let my attorney and my agents take care of it. Unfortunately, it happened at this time, but I’m going to continue to keep my head up and keep working and keep playing.”

Sports: Magic Johnson’s Group Wins Bid For Dodgers At $2 Billion

When I saw this last night, I was beyond excited!!! If you grew up in LA then you know how HUGE this is, for LA. Magic Johnson, is the MAN for pulling this off, I cannot imagine what a great feeling it must have been for him. GO DODGERS!!! All time Laker great, Magic Johnson, is exactly what the DODGERS needed…I bet everybody & they mama are screaming GO DOYERS!!! haha

LA Times reports — Go ahead, Los Angeles, dig out that dusty Dodgers cap and unwrinkle that Dodger Stadium seating chart and shout yourself blue again. Go ahead, it’s safe now, after two years in hell your city’s most enduring sports team has just been placed in the giant hands of its most enduring sports star.

A group headed by Magic Johnson has just purchased the Dodgers from Frank McCourt for $2 billion, ending a prolonged nightmare with a soaring slam dunk.

Mark Walter, chief executive of the $126-billion Guggenheim Partners financial company based in Chicago, will be the controlling owner of a group that will be led by Johnson and directed by longtime respected baseball executive Stan Kasten.

McCourt sold the Dodgers to Johnson’s group Tuesday just five hours after Major League Baseball approved three finalists for an auction. As I wrote in a column that appeared on the Internet an hour before the news broke, Johnson’s group was the obvious and best choice over out-of-town billionaires Steve Cohen and Stan Kroenke.

After successfully boycotting Dodger Stadium enough to convince MLB to run McCourt out of town, Dodgers fans are distrusting and disillusioned, and Johnson’s group is the only one with the credibility to quickly bring them back.

Johnson, whose business acumen equals his former Lakers court sense, will become a full-time team executive with an office in Dodger Stadium and a giant welcoming reach that will stretch to every corner of the disaffected Dodgers nation. Kasten, a traditional baseball guy who built the perennially contending Atlanta Braves from scratch and help shape the surging Washington Nationals, was interested in the Dodgers before McCourt bought the team in 2004 and has long held a dream of restoring them to greatness.

When I interviewed Johnson in December when The Times broke the news of his decision to pursue the team, he said, “The Dodgers are my next big thing. This is not just millions of my money, this is dear to my heart. This is bringing back the brand for the people of Los Angeles.”

At the time, Johnson said his goal would be to bring the Dodgers back to the popularity level currently enjoyed by his former team.

“When I first got to town [in 1979], the Dodgers were on Page 1 of the L.A. Times and the Lakers were on Page 3,” Johnson said. “I’ve seen how the Dodgers can be as big as the Lakers, and I want that to happen again.”

We know little about Walter and the Guggenheim folks, who will fund their majority contribution from out-of-state insurance companes, but we know that they have convinced Johnson and Kasten that it’s not about real estate or television, but baseball.

In that same December interview, Johnson said he auditioned six prospective bidders before deciding on the Guggenheim group for winning reasons.

“The first thing I asked Walter was, ‘Do you want to win, and do you want to put money in?” Johnson said at the time. “He said, ‘Absolutely.’”

Johnson said the future Dodgers owner says the things you hear from championship owners.

“Listening to Walter talk about winning, it was like listening to Jerry Buss,” Johnson said. “He told me three times, ‘All I want to do is get to the World Series.’ I know great owners, and this guy can be a great owner.”

Of course, once the initial love fest ends, the tough stuff begins.

The new owners know that Dodgers fans are not a bunch of poor saps on a deserted beach standing around an “SOS” rock formation and waiting desperately for the first ship to save them. They know that Dodgers fans are, instead, huddled and hidden in a clump of trees in the middle of the island, defiant, distrustful, and willing to remain out of sight until somebody shows up with enough smarts and savvy and charm to coax them back home.

Two billion dollars will buy the new owners no love or respect or even 30,000 folks on a school night in September. Two billion dollars will only buy them two billion questions from the toughest crowd they’ve ever faced.

Those hundreds of thousands of Dodgers fans who abandoned Chavez Ravine will need more than simple answers. They will need action, they will need explanation, they will need a group that can proactively reestablish the bonds of this city’s most enduring yet most abused connection with a sports franchise.

In my opinion, they needed Magic.

On Tuesday night, they got him, and the fastbreak is on.

The Other Laker Wives Did NOT Like Vanessa Bryant

Well I mean damn, now everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon & hate on Vanessa…I never really cared for her because she just seems to full of her damn self. Yea I get you were married to Kobe but that doesn’t make you a goddess. I see it this way, to be in a marriage for over 10 years & not be happy someone had to call it quits. I am sure it is hard to be in a marriage, where the trust was broken. Infidelity is wrong period!!! Celebrity or not, when you exchange vows with someone all that other nonsense should be CUT OUT. I am sure they both have exhausted every which way to work it out, I hope that they are able to part amicably.

Kobe Bryant’s estranged wife, Vanessa didn’t get along with Khloe Kardashian during the time Lamar Odom played for the Los Angeles Lakers, or any of the other wives of the NBA champs either, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.

Vanessa filed for divorce from her shooting guard hubby last Friday, after 10 and-a-half years of marriage, and the couple had no prenup.

Media reports surfaced that other NBA wives were keeping tabs on Kobe Bryant, and told Vanessa about his alleged infidelities, but our sources tell us that she wasn’t liked by the majority of the Lakers players’ spouses.

After Khloe Kardashian married Lamar Odom, who was playing for the Lakers, she went out of her way to try and get to know Vanessa because Kobe and her hubby are very close.

“Khloe truly tried to break through Vanessa’s icy exterior, with no success,” a team insider says. “Khloe has always been down to earth, and she became instantly very well liked by Lamar’s teammates and wives. Vanessa was extremely jealous of the loving and healthy marriage that Lamar and Khloe have. Khloe and Lamar had the Bryants over for dinner on multiple occasions, and it was always very tense because of Vanessa. Vanessa just thinks that she is better than everyone else.”

As RadarOnline.com previously reported, the NBA champ is directing all of his attention to his two daughters, and his basketball career.

“Kobe’s sole focus right now is the Los Angeles Lakers, and his two daughters. Kobe is excited for the season to finally begin, and he is very excited about the upcoming season,” the insider says. “Kobe is driven, and committed to his team, and anything that is going on in his personal life won’t affect him on the court.”

Bryant’s teammates AND their wives have wondered why he didn’t file for divorce first!

“Vanessa was extremely arrogant, and very, very hard to get along with. Kobe’s fellow Lakers had encouraged him to dump Vanessa for years because he was so unhappy. Bryant’s teammate, Derek Fisher, and his wife, Candace, fully support Kobe. Kobe didn’t pull the plug because of his two daughters. It’s easy to blame the divorce on Kobe for his cheating, but Vanessa played a significant role in the demise of their marriage,” the friend asserts.
