LA Times reports — A gunman opened fired randomly on passing motorists on Vine Street in Hollywood on Friday, critically wounding one person in the head, according to Los Angeles Police Department sources. The victim was rushed to a local hospital.
Bystanders saw a man firing and hailed down two police officers working on a nearby movie set, according to a source. They fired on the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Much of the area was closed off by officials, causing traffic snarls across Hollywood. Video images show the body of the suspect covered in a sheet in the middle of the street. The shooting occurred near a McDonalds on Vine Street, just south of the ArcLight movie theater.
A witness told KABC-TV that the he heard nine to 12 shots. Oscar Herrera told the station he saw a man with a gun pointed up in the air walking northbound on Vine Street and then when traffic started coming by he lowered the gun and started pointing it at cars.
